The landing between flat 3B and flat 3A was only four steps wide. A single tube light hummed above it. The stairwell smelled of old paint and the faint cumin that always drifted up from the ground-floor kitchen. At night the building went quiet enough that a single door closing could be heard three floors down.

Ananya lived in 3B. Twenty-nine. Married two years. Her husband worked night shifts at the hospital and came home only at dawn. She taught primary school in the mornings and spent the evenings grading papers or watching the same three shows on loop. The walls were thin. She knew the exact sound of her neighbour’s key in the lock.

Rohan lived in 3A. Thirty-three. Divorced. Quiet. He worked from home most days and left the flat only for groceries or a late walk. He had the kind of face that looked stern until he smiled, and he almost never smiled in the corridor. Ananya had noticed the way his shoulders filled a plain white shirt the first week she moved in. She had told herself the noticing was ordinary.

It stopped being ordinary the night she knocked on his door at twelve-forty for a spoon of sugar.

She had been making tea. The sugar tin was empty. Her husband would not be back for another five hours. She could have waited until morning. Instead she tied her hair loosely, pulled a soft cotton kurta over her nightdress, and stepped onto the landing barefoot.

She knocked once, lightly. The door opened almost at once. Rohan stood there in grey sweatpants and a faded black T-shirt. His hair was messy. The flat behind him was dim.

Sugar, she said. I’m sorry it’s late. I ran out.

He looked at her for a second longer than necessary. Then he stepped aside. Come in. I’ll get it.

She should have waited at the door. She stepped inside. The flat smelled of coffee and clean laundry. He opened a cabinet, found a small steel container, and poured sugar into a bowl. When he turned back she was still standing near the entrance, arms loosely crossed, the kurta thin enough that the shape of her breasts showed when she breathed.

He set the bowl on the counter. His voice was lower than usual. You could have texted the society group.

I don’t like asking strangers at midnight.

I’m not a stranger. I’m four steps away.

The air between them changed. She felt it in her stomach first, then lower. He did not move closer. He simply watched her the way a man watches something he has wanted for a long time and is finally allowed to look at without pretending.

Ananya’s throat felt tight. I should go.

You should, he agreed. But you haven’t picked up the sugar yet.

She reached for the bowl. Their fingers brushed. Neither of them pulled away. The contact lasted three full seconds. Then she lifted the bowl and held it between them like a useless shield.

Thank you, she said.

He nodded. At the door she paused. The landing light hummed. Somewhere below a scooter started and faded. She turned back. He was still standing in the same place, still watching her.

She set the bowl down on the nearest surface, walked the two steps to him, and kissed him.

The kiss was not polite. His mouth opened immediately. One hand went into her hair, the other to her waist, pulling her flush against him. She felt how hard he already was. The knowledge sent a fresh rush of heat between her legs. He backed her against the wall beside the door. The tube light from the landing leaked under the frame and painted a thin gold line across the floor.

His hand slid under the kurta and found bare skin. She was not wearing a bra. When his palm covered her breast she made a small broken sound into his mouth. He pinched the nipple lightly, then harder, testing. Her hips pushed forward on their own.

He broke the kiss long enough to speak against her ear. Tell me to stop and I will.

Don’t stop.

He pushed the kurta up and off. The nightdress followed. She stood in only her panties, back to the wall, breathing hard. He looked at her for a long moment, eyes dark. Then he dropped to his knees, hooked the panties aside, and put his mouth on her.

She had to bite her own wrist to stay quiet. His tongue was exact, relentless. Two fingers slid inside her and curled. She came faster than she expected, thighs shaking, one hand in his hair, the other braced against the wall. He stayed with her through it, then stood, wiped his mouth, and kissed her so she tasted herself.

He freed himself from the sweatpants. His cock was thick, flushed, already wet at the tip. She wrapped her hand around it and stroked once. He hissed. Then he lifted one of her legs, hooked it over his hip, and pushed inside her in a single slow thrust.

The stretch pulled a sound from both of them. He stayed still for a second, forehead against hers, letting her adjust. Then he began to move. Deep, steady strokes that made the wall at her back feel like the only solid thing left. She wrapped both legs around him. He held her up easily. Every thrust drove her higher against the plaster. She came again with her face buried in his neck, trying to muffle the noise.

He did not stop. He fucked her through it until his own rhythm broke and he finished inside her with a low groan, hips locked tight.

They stayed joined for a long minute. Then he eased out. She felt the warm slide of him leaving her, the wetness that followed. Her legs were unsteady. He steadied her with a hand on her waist.

I should go, she whispered.

Not yet.

He turned her, walked her the few steps to the open door, and onto the landing itself. The tube light hummed louder here. The stairwell dropped away into darkness. He pressed her against the landing wall, face to the cool plaster, and entered her from behind in one smooth push. She gasped. He covered her mouth with his hand and fucked her harder this time, the wet sound of their bodies loud in the quiet building.

Someone’s door closed two floors below. They both froze, still joined. Footsteps faded. He started moving again, slower, deeper. His other hand reached around and found her clit. She came a third time with his palm over her mouth and her forehead against the wall.

When he finished the second time he stayed buried for several breaths. Then he pulled out carefully. She turned. They looked at each other in the harsh tube light, both still half undressed, both marked by what they had just done.

He helped her back into the nightdress and kurta. The sugar bowl still sat on the counter inside his flat. She left it there. At the door of 3B she paused.

Same time tomorrow? he asked quietly.

She nodded once. Then she slipped inside and closed the door as softly as she could.

After that the sugar request became a code neither of them ever said out loud. Some nights she knocked. Some nights he did. They used the landing wall, the top three stairs when the building felt empty enough, once the floor of his living room when they needed more space. She learned how to come without making a sound that would carry. He learned the exact moment her body tightened before an orgasm and how to keep her there longer.

Her husband still came home at dawn smelling of hospital disinfectant. She still made his tea. The mornings still belonged to the ordinary world. The nights after midnight belonged to the four steps of landing and the man who lived on the other side of it.

One night they almost got caught. A neighbour from the second floor came up early for a walk. They were on the stairs, her back to the railing, his hand under her kurta. They heard the footsteps in time. He pulled out, she straightened her clothes, and they stood two steps apart discussing the water tanker schedule when the neighbour appeared. The neighbour nodded and continued up. After the door closed above them they looked at each other and almost laughed. Then he pushed her back against the railing and finished what they had started, slower this time, both of them listening for any further sound.

Weeks turned into months. The hunger did not fade. If anything the risk sharpened it. She began leaving her door unlocked after eleven. He began texting a single word when he was ready: landing. She would step out in whatever she was wearing and he would take her there, or pull her into his flat, or both.

They never spoke about the future. She had a marriage that still looked intact from the outside. He had a divorce that had taught him not to ask for more than the present could give. The arrangement was simple and temporary and somehow more honest than most of the permanent things around them.

One dawn her husband came home earlier than usual. She was still in Rohan’s bed. They heard the key in 3B. She dressed in thirty seconds, crossed the landing barefoot, and slipped into her own flat just as her husband switched on the kitchen light. She made tea with steady hands. He kissed her cheek and said the shift had been quiet. She smiled the correct smile and felt Rohan’s come still wet between her thighs.

That evening she texted him: not tonight. He replied with a single period. She understood. The next night the landing light was off when she stepped out. He was already waiting in the dark. They did not speak. He simply took her hand and led her inside.

The building kept their secret the only way a building can: by staying full of other people’s ordinary lives, ordinary doors, ordinary footsteps that never quite coincided with the soft click of 3A or 3B after midnight. And on the four steps of landing between those two doors, two people who had begun with a request for sugar kept finding new reasons not to go back to sleep.
