The Week I Stopped Writing and Started Feeling Again

I had rented the cottage for seven days with the noble intention of finishing my manuscript.

By the second afternoon I had written exactly fourteen sentences and spent the rest of the time staring at the trees. My husband had been supportive in the distant way he was supportive of most things that didn’t require his presence. “Go,” he had said. “Clear your head.” He had not offered to come with me. I had not asked.

The caretaker’s name was Vivaan. He arrived on the third morning to check the generator after a storm had knocked the power out overnight. Mid-thirties, quiet, competent with his hands. He fixed the problem in under an hour, declined tea twice, and only accepted the third time I asked.

We sat on the narrow veranda. Conversation stayed practical—weather, the cottage’s quirks, how long I planned to stay. But something in the silence between sentences felt different. Or maybe I was different. Lonelier. Hungrier for a kind of attention I had stopped expecting.

When he stood to leave I heard myself say, “There’s leftover pasta if you want to stay for lunch.”

He looked at me for a long second. Then he nodded.

We ate at the small wooden table. The power was still intermittent; we used the daylight. Our fingers brushed when I passed the water. Neither of us pulled away quickly. Afterward he helped with the dishes. Standing side by side at the sink, the quiet grew heavier. I could feel the heat of him. When he turned to reach for a towel our bodies were suddenly too close.

“Ananya,” he said quietly. Just my name. A question and a warning.

I answered by stepping into him.

The first kiss was slow. Careful. Like both of us were afraid of the consequences. Then his hand came up to my jaw and the carefulness burned away. He kissed me like a man who had been thinking about it longer than he wanted to admit. I kissed him back the same way.

We didn’t make it to the bedroom the first time.

He lifted me onto the kitchen counter. My cotton dress was pushed up. His mouth found my throat, my collarbone, the tops of my breasts. When he pulled the neckline down and closed his mouth over my nipple I arched against him with a sound I hadn’t made in years. His hand slid between my legs and he groaned when he felt how wet I already was.

“Tell me to stop,” he said against my skin.

“Don’t you dare.”

He dragged my underwear down and dropped to his knees on the kitchen tiles. The first long stroke of his tongue made my head fall back against the cupboard. He licked me slowly, thoroughly, like he had all afternoon and intended to use it. Two fingers slid inside me, curling, while his mouth stayed on my clit. I came hard, thighs shaking around his head, one hand buried in his hair.

He stood, wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, and looked at me. I was still perched on the counter, dress bunched around my waist, completely exposed.

“Bedroom,” I whispered.

He carried me. We fell onto the old wooden bed that creaked under our weight. I helped him pull his shirt off. Then his jeans. When he settled between my thighs I reached down and guided him in.

The stretch was perfect. He sank into me slowly, inch by inch, until he was buried to the hilt. We both went still for a moment, foreheads touching, breathing the same air. Then he started to move.

It wasn’t rushed. It wasn’t rough. It was deep and steady and devastating. He watched my face the entire time, one hand cupped under my head, the other gripping my hip. Every thrust felt like it reached somewhere that had been empty for too long. I came again with my face pressed to his neck, arms locked around him. He followed soon after, grinding deep and staying there as he emptied himself inside me.

We didn’t speak for a long time afterward. He stayed inside me, weight braced on his elbows, mouth against my temple. I ran my fingers up and down his back and felt something in my chest loosen for the first time in years.

Eventually he pulled out. I felt the warm slide of him leaving me. He rolled onto his side and looked at me in the afternoon light.

“I can go,” he said softly.

“Stay.”

He stayed.

The second time was near dusk. I woke to his hand sliding over my stomach, then lower. I was still wet with him. He entered me from behind, slow and deep, one arm wrapped around my waist. We moved together without speaking. When I came it felt like something breaking open. He held me through it and kept moving until he finished again.

He left after dark with the quiet promise that he would come back the next day to “check the generator again.”

He came back every day for the rest of the week.

Some days we barely left the bed. He took me in the morning light, then again after we cooked simple meals together, then once more against the bathroom wall while the shower ran. Each time was different—sometimes tender, sometimes hungry, always intense. He learned the sounds I made when I was close. I learned the exact way his breath changed when he was about to come.

On the fifth evening we sat on the veranda wrapped in a shared blanket, my head on his shoulder, watching the trees. The manuscript lay untouched on the desk inside.

“I don’t know what I’m doing,” I admitted.

“Neither do I.” His fingers traced idle patterns on my arm. “But I know I don’t want this week to end.”

I turned my face into his neck and closed my eyes. “Neither do I.”

The last night arrived too soon. We made love slowly, almost reverently, as if both of us were trying to memorise the feeling. When I came I felt tears slip out of the corners of my eyes. He kissed them away and held me until his own release took him.

In the morning he helped me load the car. At the door he cupped my face in both hands and rested his forehead against mine.

“If you ever come back here,” he said, “the door will be open.”

I nodded, not trusting my voice.

I drove away with the windows down, the scent of him still on my skin, my body pleasantly sore. The city came into view too soon. Somewhere in that city my husband was living his ordinary life, unaware that the woman coming home to him had remembered what it felt like to be wanted—and was no longer sure she could forget it again.

I didn’t know yet what I was going to do.

I only knew that for the first time in a long time, I felt awake.
