The Cancelled Flight That Finally Broke Us Open
The departure board flashed red at 11:47 p.m.
CANCELLED.
I stared at it for a full ten seconds before I felt him step up beside me. Kabir. My project lead. The man I had spent five years carefully not thinking about after 6 p.m.
“Every flight out is grounded until morning,” he said. His voice was calm, but I could hear the same exhaustion I felt. “Weather.”
We were the last two from the client meeting still at the airport. Everyone else had caught earlier flights. The airline was offering hotel vouchers. There was exactly one room left in the entire airport hotel.
We took it.
The room was small, functional, one king bed. The silence that settled after the door closed was thicker than it had ever been in the office. Kabir set his bag down and ran a hand through his hair.
“I’ll take the floor,” he offered automatically.
“Don’t be ridiculous.” My voice came out rougher than I intended. “We’re adults. We can share a bed.”
He looked at me for a long moment. Something unreadable moved behind his eyes. Then he nodded.
We took turns in the bathroom. I changed into the oversized t-shirt I kept in my work bag for emergencies. When I came out he was sitting on the edge of the bed in a black t-shirt and sleep pants, scrolling through emails he wasn’t really reading. The air felt charged, like the moment before lightning.
I slid under the covers on my side. He turned off the lamp. Darkness settled, broken only by the thin line of light under the door.
I don’t know how long we lay there. Long enough for my eyes to adjust. Long enough for me to become painfully aware of every shift of his breathing.
“Ananya.”
My name in the dark sounded different.
“Yeah?”
A pause. Then, quietly: “I’ve thought about this.”
My heart slammed once against my ribs. “About what?”
“You. Me. A room like this. More times than I should have.”
The confession hung between us. Five years of careful professionalism, of late nights and shared taxis and almost-moments that never quite crossed the line, suddenly compressed into one sentence.
I turned toward him. In the faint light I could see the outline of his face.
“So have I,” I said.
That was all it took.
He closed the distance. The first kiss was slow, almost testing. Then his hand slid into my hair and the testing ended. He kissed me like a man who had been starving. I opened for him immediately, hands fisting in his t-shirt, pulling him closer.
He rolled me under him in one smooth motion. The weight of him settled between my thighs and I felt how hard he already was. His mouth moved to my jaw, my throat, the place just below my ear that made my breath stutter. When his hand pushed under my t-shirt and closed over my bare breast I arched into him with a sound I had never made in his presence before.
“Tell me to stop,” he said against my skin, voice rough.
“Don’t you dare.”
He sat up long enough to pull his shirt off. I did the same. The first full press of skin against skin made us both go still for a second. Then his mouth was on my breast, hot and open, while his hand slid down my stomach and into my underwear.
He groaned when he felt how wet I was. “Fuck, Ananya.”
Two fingers pushed inside me. I gasped. He worked me open with slow, deliberate strokes, thumb circling my clit, until my hips were lifting to meet his hand. When I came the first time I turned my face into his shoulder to muffle the sound. He kept his fingers moving through it, gentling only when the tremors faded.
He stripped the rest of the way quickly. I pushed my underwear down and kicked them away. When he settled back between my thighs I reached down and wrapped my hand around him. He was thick, heavy, already leaking. I guided him to me.
He pushed in slowly. The stretch was intense. I was tight and he was patient, giving me inch after inch until he was buried to the hilt. We both exhaled hard. His forehead dropped to mine.
“Okay?” he whispered.
I nodded, legs already wrapping around him.
He started to move. Deep, measured thrusts that seemed to hit every sensitive place at once. I held on and met him. The years of restraint made every stroke feel amplified. When he shifted the angle and drove particularly deep I cried out. He did it again. And again.
I came a second time with my nails in his back. He followed soon after, burying himself deep and pulsing inside me with a low, broken sound against my neck.
We stayed locked together, breathing hard. His thumb brushed my cheekbone.
“I’ve wanted this since the Mumbai project,” he admitted quietly.
“I know.” I turned my head and kissed the inside of his wrist. “Me too.”
The second time was slower. He turned me onto my side and entered me from behind, one arm wrapped around my waist, mouth against the back of my shoulder. We moved together in a rhythm that felt almost lazy at first, then gradually more urgent. His hand slid down between my legs and rubbed tight circles over my clit until I came again, shaking. He held me through it and kept thrusting until he finished a second time.
Afterward we lay facing each other in the dark. His fingers traced idle patterns on my hip.
“What happens when we get back?” I asked.
He was quiet for a long moment. “I don’t know. But I know I can’t go back to pretending I don’t want you.”
I shifted closer until my forehead rested against his collarbone. His arm came around me automatically.
“Neither can I.”
We slept eventually. I woke once more in the grey light before dawn to his mouth on my breast and his hand already between my legs. The third time was sleepy and tender and somehow more intense for it. When we finished he stayed inside me, face buried in my hair, until the alarm on his phone started to sound.
We showered separately. Dressed in yesterday’s clothes. Shared a silent taxi back to the airport when the flights resumed.
At the security gate he looked at me for a long second. Then he leaned in and kissed me once, soft and deliberate, in full view of anyone who might be watching.
“I’ll call you tonight,” he said.
I nodded, not trusting my voice.
The cancelled flight had given us one night.
Neither of us intended to let it be the only one.
